Thread Summary

This thread follows the energetic and controversial journey of JoshCornell1, a treasure hunter who claims to have solved the The Secret Houston casque puzzle. The community watches (and reacts) in real time as he updates from the field—digging in Hermann Park, fighting off fatigue, and breaking $1.40 shovels.

🌧️ Boots on the Ground

- Josh arrives in Houston under dreary weather, determined to dig at Lykes Grove.

- He posts from the airport, from the museum, and even while hiding from a worker sitting *right by the f***ing treasure.*

- Despite setbacks, he claims to have identified the exact location using references to the Miller Outdoor Theatre and the old fountain site.

📸 Pics or It Didn’t Happen

- Many forum members encourage Josh but demand proof. Without photos, videos, or any documented holes, his credibility wears thin.

- Doghousereiley, a local, tries to meet Josh and later physically goes to the park to search for any sign of the digs—finding none.

- Josh mentions filming a documentary, which only raises expectations for visual evidence that never quite appears.

🔥 The Peanut Gallery

- Community reactions are a mix of encouragement, mockery, and brutal honesty.

- burnstyle, WhiteRabbit, strike13, and others try to support Josh—while also poking holes in his logic.

- fox, BINGO, and maltedfalcon challenge his shifting theories, inconsistent locations, and absence of results.

- Heated quotes from Josh’s past posts—boasting about solving every casque—are quoted back at him with glee when his dig comes up empty.

🧠 Puzzle Debates & Map Wars

- Posters dive into the validity of Houston clues, debating whether the casque could be in the Children’s Zoo or by the obelisk.

- MrBackstop contributes a thoughtful interpretation of the image symbolism with Miller Hill and zoo architecture.

- The location of old vs. current train tracks, fountains, and bridges becomes a key sticking point.

🎯 Final Thoughts

In the end, this thread is part adventure log, part intervention. While Josh’s bravado frustrates many, it also sparks real-time investigation, collaborative mapping, and even a few laughs. His trip becomes a reminder that in The Secret, the hunt is half the fun—whether or not you walk away with a casque.

Josh contacted me a week ago about meeting him on feb 13 in Houston I am freelance camera operator and had a gig that day. I can't turn down work so we planned on meeting about 9 or 10 am on feb 14 I texted Josh early in the day twice with no response About 3 or 4 pm I got a message on the board that he was at the Museum across the street from Herman Park and if I could meet I'm later I was way north at the time and had to pick up my cousin at the airport at 5 and then to plans the night of feb 14 During this time I missed a call from someone with a Canada (Ontario) number I suggested via Q4T message let us try feb 15 I did not see Josh Cornell in Houston but we did try to coordinate I never volunteered to dig. Josh asked to borrow a shovel. I told him I don't have one or use one I only volunteered to hold a camera and film while he dug. He did say he only needed a trowel and gloves (optional) I did not want to steal his thunder Josh Good Luck in New Orleans

Doghousereiley

I don't see how the casque could be on Bird island if you follow the clues Bird island was outside of the old 1982 train tracks Josh at what point do you step over small of scale (the train tracks) unlesss you step over it 3 or four times going counter clock wise around the lake

if you are referring to the Wilhouse plea email of "it would not be a waste of time to dig there, I can make no guarantees what so ever" I feel there is debate as to whether BP was confirming the Children's Zoo. I don't think it is a confirmer My opinion is at the time of Wilhosue email, Bryon Priess did not remember where he buried all the casques and was unable to provide an informed reply. BP could have just said "It would not be a waste of time to dig there". and stop. In my opinion he did not remember so he added the" No guarantees what so ever" comment Falcon. is there something I missed?

Did I somehow miss reading Preiss was suffering from Alzheimers, dementia, or other form of memory loss? Otherwise, how would someone forget 1) spending what is to be presumed several months or years of planning to determine burial sites, 2) having casques made unique to each of the puzzles, 3) obtaining the jewels for prizes, 4) creating cryptic verses, 5) traveling to each of these cities 6) digging in a specific location (probably in the cover of night and cautious not to be seen), 7) apparently taking several photographs of items in the city and the dig site, and then working with an artist to create the Images with all sorts of hidden symbols and images from those very same photos?

Doghousereiley

meaty puffs listen to the recent podcast or read Cleveland thread Brian Zinn details his meeting with Priess. Two examples that lead me to this conclusion. He forgot where he put the solutions. He forget he had 25 grand in savings bonds Falcon I admit I am one how want to believe it was not in the Children's Zoo as I still dig in Herman park I also believe if it was in the Children's Zoo then Wilhouse would have found it He had almost unrestricted access and digging tools and a whole construction crew looking for a plexiglass box with a ceramic box in it as they worked How could of wilhouse missed it?

maltedfalcon

Doghousereiley wrote:: meaty puffs He had almost unrestricted access and digging tools and a whole construction crew looking for a plexiglass box with a ceramic box in it as they worked How could of wilhouse missed it? Not my story to tell, but I would guess in a zoo like environment, between 1981 and 2004 a period of 23 years, there might have been some construction, groundwork, paving, remodeling or even planting. So in a small enclosed busy environment like that you tell me what are the odds of the casque simply surviving.

Erpobdelliforme

Unknown: Yes but all that debate is by the people after the fact who don't want to face the fact this one is gone. What is the fact in question? There is nothing dispositive about Preiss' statement to Wilhouse, which is what bigmattyh is referencing. And there are and plenty of reasons to believe that while he (BP) may have been telling the truth, he (BP) wasn't telling the whole truth. Preiss did not say it was in the Children's Zoo in Houston. Wilhouse found nothing in the Children's Zoo in Houston, despite tearing it up with a backhoe. And perhaps most importantly, the "solve" has holes you can drive a truck through, including no reasonable explanation for "in the middle of four alike". So absent more compelling information, the "fact" that this one is gone because it was in the CZ is really nothing more than an opinion.

Erpobdelliforme

Unknown: So in a small enclosed busy environment like that you tell me what are the odds of the casque simply surviving. About the same as if it was in a small planter in Cleveland would be my guess. With all due respect to everyone involved, this is just another tired version of "I did not find it where I know it should be, so it must be gone".

maltedfalcon

Erpobdelliforme wrote:: the "fact" that this one is gone because it was in the CZ is really nothing more than an opinion. Yes indeed! that was my opinion as are every other thought about the solves for this hunt. Mine and all others aren't worth anything until someone finds a casque. But we still come back to the one fact we can point to about this casque. And that is simply When BP was asked about the Children's Zoo he said: "It would not be a waste of time to dig there."

Erpobdelliforme

Unknown: he said: "It would not be a waste of time to dig there." "But I make no guarantees whatsoever." I've dug a lot of holes Matt, and so have you. How many have been a "waste of time'?

Erpobdelliforme

Unknown: not one was a waste of time, Exactly. Whether we are digging in Houston or any other city, the only way to KNOW you are right is to identify a spot, dig a hole, and find a casque (or the remains of one). It's as true now as it was when the book was published in 1982. The best "solutions", whether they are verse-based, image-based, or some combination of the two are a distant second to that if they produce an empty hole (or no response from Preiss back when you could submit a solution by mail). But with Preiss having given up on the puzzle, empty holes were the only way to advance or abandon a theory with confidence. I'm not saying that is what Preiss meant when he told Wilhouse that digging in the CZ "would not be a waste of time", but I would not rule it out either. When it came to this puzzle, the rules were clearly written, but the man spoke in riddles.

MrBackstop

Josh, I take it you never read my thoughts on the main 3 columns. Here it is again: The front column appears to represent the shape of the area around the Sam Houston statue and the reflection pool. This seems too simple but the thing that caught my attention was the bell shape at the bottom. Knowing that the columns are from the old stage at the Miller Outdoor theatre, I looked in some history and found that the theatre produced a free musical called "Bells are Ringing" and this free musical has been going on for years. The Rhino column took me awhile to figure out, "why a rhino?" As I looked thru Miller Outdoor Theatre photos I came across one from the side at ground level and noticed how it looked like a Rhinoceros horn. Again, as you know, the Rhino head is on top of a column from the old theatre. The Camel column was the hardest to figure out. I couldn't understand why that column didn't have a shadow. (Just like the palm tree....ravelin, in Image 6). Once I heard about Miller hill being built from dirt from the park to form the amphitheater I realized why. The camel hump is Miller Hill so there would be no shadow. I also believe the columns in the background represent the columns in the Mecom-Rockwell Colonnade.

MrBackstop, thanks for adding substance to our collective knowledge. I didn't know about the rhino column. I like the idea of camel [hump] = Miller Hill. Thatr same kind of logic has me wondering if the rhino [horn] is the pointy tip of the MOT. I disagree about the large ball and column being identified with the Sam Houston / reflection pool shape in aerial. Seems more a coincidence. I don't have any alternative evidence to go on, it's just my gut feeling.

But I stand in awe of how you can dig holes (even in the wrong place) with a $1.40 shovel and leave absolutely no scar on the soil... Then it occured to me you are so bad at reading a map, you must have dug your holes in the wrong place...

Now you claim to have been in Houston but lo and behold......nary a casque but an abundance of excuses. For arguments sake.....let's suppose you actually were in Houston to search. Now that you came up empty handed perhaps you are just like the rest of us....too stupid to figure these out. I'm sure you'll never post a picture of a casque you've found because I honestly don't think you have any earthly clue where they are. I'm also fairly certain that you won't even post a pic showing that you are in a casque city because I think you are still at home in you're mom's basement. Thanks for the entertainment though.... lol

You keep parroting that with nothing to show. You've now allegedly been to 2 cities but all we hear are excuses. You haven't solved anything. You keep fishing for clues from other players who thankfully are smart enough to give you anything. Give me your Twain theory and I'll share one of the many things only I have figured out. Is that how it works for you? Laughable. I'm sure I speak for the masses by saying either put up or shut up. Show us a casque or tell us your high and mighty solve since the casque is unobtainable. I'm sure you can nor will do either.

I am quite jealous of your trip being on the ground in multiple cities. What I am sad about is the way you just recycle ideas off the wiki as your own and then fill in with off the cuff bullshit. You know if you had just done it all the same and phrased your posts a bit different everybody on this board would A: Be cheering for you and B: helping in all kinds of ways.

there is no doubt you said you were gonna pull a casque out of the ground in Houston You failed It is proven. you were beat Josh Cornell 0. Priess 1

JoshCornell1 wrote:: you will know when youre right...you will have accounted for every single clue and its various layers... And when that happens I; (a) physically dig up a casque (b) have someone who is nearer than I dig up the casque (c) happily share my entire solve to aid in both (a) and (b) above or in the event that the casque is actually unobtainable.

you called twice in a 2 minute span of time so yes multiple times

Doghousereiley

tell me the spot and I will go with a probe today it is a beautiful day is it the same as the wiki site. form your forum post it seems so please be very articulate or provide specific spot I am trying to help you redeem your crown

Doghousereiley

the obelisk has four sides I could face any one of them is the lake at my back. or is the reflecting pool at my back

maltedfalcon

JoshCornell1 wrote:: go to the obelisk. face it. turn right. follow tracks into woods. its to left of first bend in track. theres a sewer there. i dug around the sewer a bit...you might be able to see it. So here *x-marks the spot" In this wide open sewer free area...?

Doghousereiley

your first solution was on the southwest corner of lake. an area you called likes grove now you say casque is buried on the northeast corner of lake got it I will check it out

Why don't you just say your 100% correct solve is somewhere in the vicinity of Hermann Park?

Doghousereiley

JoshCornell1 wrote:: when probing near the sewer, make sure you give yourself a few inches of space, cause cement juts out close to it...thats how i broke my shovel lol Thank you I am not worried I use really digging tools that don't break.

Doghousereiley

Josh Is your current solution based on the current placement of the train tracks? I am not even sure your X is within the old train loop. The tracks are different location than they were In 1982 The train station approach were track curved was much more south than your spot Your X is place on the tracks were there was a straight run gong east to west and I am not sure your X is even within the old boundaries of the train loop if so then just barely If your solution is based on curves in old train track then you need to re calculate

Doghousereiley

the obelisk was moved to the south about 20 ft and the railroad was moved 10 ft north so now the train runs right past the obelisk I have uploaded a new video with a wider view of Herman park I also tried to draw in the old train route so you can see what was in the old smaller train loop. Obviously I am not good at photoshop https://youtu.be/GmGxyZTlwBY
