Thread Summary
The forum discussion revolves around a project involving finding sports team logos or names in images as part of a treasure hunt. Users like Kalessin, Mister EZ, funsun, Capricorn, JoshCornell, MERLIN, and erexere share insights and interpretations related to symbols and clues found in the images. The discussion includes detailed analysis of various elements such as zodiac signs, sports team logos, historical references, and potential hidden connections. There are disagreements about the accuracy and significance of these identifications, with some users questioning whether the connections are coincidental or intentional. Kalessin and erexere stress the importance of city confirmers and suggest that the symbols may hold deeper meanings beyond mere coincidence. The conversation also includes references to bands like U2 and the Expos logo.

I've been working on a little side project, which is to see how many disguised (or not-so-disguised) sports logos I can find in the puzzles. I don't have ten (using the "disappearing clue" theory of 10 puzzles having a common type of clue, then another with a very hard version of it, and then one without it completely), but I do have the following (all teams existing and located in or near the city in question as of 1981):
Not so big a stretch:
Image 1 -- San Francisco, Oakland MLB Athletics, "A" logo 3rd symbol up from the bottom of the right side of the woman's dress
Image 4 -- Cleveland NFL Browns, the brown helmet (which is their only logo) on the centaur
Image 5 -- Chicago NBA Bulls, logo hanging on the figure in the painting
Image 7 -- New Orleans NFL Saints, the left-hand flower on the clock face is a lily, which is a fleur-de-lis
Image 11 -- Boston, NBA Celtics (green clover in the fairy wing, it's 4-leafed in the Image, 3-leafed in the Celtics logo), plus there is a possible capital B (for the MLB Red Sox) in the bottom of the panel in the woman's dress with all the looping vines
Image 12 -- NYC, MLB NY Giants (pre-relocation). It's not in the image but in Verse 10: "In the shadow of the grey giant". If you look in "The Secret" book on page 89, behind ("In the shadow of") the retired ("grey") MLB NY Giant player Monte Irvin (wearing a uniform used for appearances with the relocated San Francisco Giants) is a poster or blown-up photo of Irvin, Willie Mays, and Don Mueller, all in NY Giants uniforms.
More of a stretch:
Image 3 -- Roanoke VA, no major sports teams in-state, but the Washington Redskins are nearby and practice in VA, and there are red skins hanging from the bottom of the armor.
Image 6 -- St. Augustine FL, a Gator is outlined on the right hand side of the rock outcropping (other teams would be the Dolphins and the Buccaneers)
No logos that I could find yet:
Image 2 -- Charleston SC (USC Gamecocks, Clemson Tigers; maybe other college teams? no pro teams in SC or NC)
Image 8 -- Houston (looking for Cowboys, Mavericks, Rockets, Spurs, Astros, Rangers)(EDIT: and NFL Houston Oilers, who moved to Tennessee in 1996, thanks MisterEz!)
Image 9 -- Montreal (looking for Canadiens ("h-in-C" logo), Expos ("e-M-b" logo)
Image 10 -- Milwaukee WI (Packers, Brewers, NBA Bucks)

The "wall poster" with Monte Irvin can be found as a Getty Image with Irvin, Willie Mays, and Don Mueller, (photo title "Giants Outfielders Posing by Baseball Bat Collection").
Page 89 in the book:

Wording of part of the caption at Getty Images:
"When the World Series begins September 29th [1954], much of the Giants' batting strategy will be based on the performance of three outfielders-(Left to right): Monte Irvin; Willie Mays; and Don Mueller."
Mister EZ
Don't forget to look for an oil derrick in image 8.
(The Houston Oilers didn't move to Tennessee until the late 90's.)
Kalessin
Houston Oilers! Thank you!
(Whenever I hear "Oilers" I think "NHL Edmonton Oilers"...)

So what *are* you talking about? If it's sports team logos (or names I suppose) in the Images or Verses that match a city, then this is the thread for it, and let's hear what you've got.

Unknown:
Montreal (looking for Canadiens ("h-in-C" logo),
It might be in the hair, ear level on the model's left side. Using the Wiki's grid system, the location would be E/F-8.

Oh cool! With the capital H tilted about 45 degrees to the right (look for the parallel lines), directly above the left edge of the earlobe.
I'm beginning to think that a group of the logos (not including NY Giants and the Chicago Bulls) have about the same level of disguise.
(There also looks like there might be something else, not a sports logo, in Image 9, in the left-hand curl below the curl that looks like a big C. Starting immediately to the left of the earlobe, and slanting down and to the left. JJP hiding things in hair and fur...)

JJP did say once that the centaurs helmet was a clue for something, but he couldnt remember what.
maybe that's it.

Cleveland Cavaliers. I had this one early.
This is a cavalier’s helmet. Not all had the top ridge.
Kalessin
I stopped at the color, and didn't think too much about the helmet shape...thank you!
It could be two birds with one stone: the Cavaliers cavalier helmet shape, and the brown Browns helmet.

They also have symbols of the zodiac if you really think it's that deep. (I don't generally subscribe, but you can find interesting connections in other images)
Capricorn:

montreal refs the expos (defunct baseball team) which was brought to mtl under the mayoral term of jean drapeau, who also oversaw the 67 centennial and 76 olympics

Image 1 - in the rock area above her head....I always saw this as a SF 49er with that vertical stripe on the helmet.

I think you can eliminate the helmet in image 4 as representing the Browns. It's not exactly their color Brown, imo. The Browns helmet is Orange....their shade of brown is deeper. I don't think we can say 'It's close to Brown, even though the shade is off...so it represents the Cleveland Browns'. Also, I don't think the shape of the helmet represents the Cavaliers...I think that's a stretch....they're too different, imo.
Both 'connections' seem to be a leap to me.
As for JJP saying it represents a clue for 'something', I think 421 nailed it back in 2014:

The house across from the columns...window at the top of the house, in the middle:

Sorry...but, I don't see the sports connection there.
Maybe there's something else in the image you've missed...?
Kalessin
Okay, so the centaur's helmet can be moved to "More of a stretch". I would edit the thread-starting post if I could, but editing has already expired on it.
That window clue on the house is great. (And for that matter, that's a really nice house! Wouldn't mind living there myself!)

Okay... what other Zodiac signs do you see?
The early 80's still had a lot of Age of Aquarius going on, giving way to New Age crystals weirdness...

I dont agree with the idea that sports teams are much involved unless there was some interesting historic context like where was hockey or baseball first played. Maybe then it would have the kind of substance that Preiss' Fair Folk would draw upon, otherwise it seems you're just making some odd coincidental connections on top of some other symbolic layer.

Was that piece of artwork made for U2 in 1981 or previous, or was it made by user JPLC on the u2start.com forum about 3 years ago?

Only as city confirmers, as the topic says. I think there are too many logos for it to be coincidence, though they don't appear in all the images.
