Thread Summary
The forum discussion revolves around a treasure hunt related to the Montreal casque and its potential connection to Verse 5, with users like Delilah84, Mister EZ, and Scrappy929 sharing insights and theories. Delilah84's discoveries in San Francisco, particularly the Arc Light apartments, suggest progress in solving the puzzle. The conversation also delves into deciphering clues related to Montreal, New Orleans, and San Francisco, with users exploring anagrams, image-verse matches, and historical references. However, personal disagreements and skepticism, such as in JoshCornell's case, create tension within the discussion. Users express frustration at the hunt's complexity and the lack of guidance, contemplating giving up or suggesting annual hints to aid progress. The involvement of artist John Palencar in the treasure hunt adds another layer to the conversation, with users like Meteor expressing frustration and proposing a gem prize to encourage solving the challenge. Overall, the forum discussion combines efforts to decode clues, personal disagreements, frustration at the hunt's difficulty, and suggestions for improving guidance to ensure progress in solving the treasure hunt.

San Franciscans! Ready to go digging?!
(and major Eureka moment at the end of the post for Montreal solve)
PLEASE STAY WITH ME!
So, after the Japanese translation of The Secret came out I started doubting that Montreal casque was linked to verse 5.
The podcast revealed that Lane was a proper name and the only one I could find was outside Montreal, Laurentian Lane, a Bowling Club, incredibly set at number 222 or a huge road. But nothing else in the poem could match this place.
I also was less and less convinced that the legeater was very relevant and so the Golden Mile neighborhood, but nothing in the poem was matching these places.
So I started trying to fit Montreal in Verse #2, as other people previously stated. I was more appealed by this solution, especially the one proposed on Reddit by u/SkullyXFile in these threads:
-
https://www.reddit.com/r/12keys/comments/3twypj/my_belief_image_9_montreal_is_matched_with_verse/
-
https://imgur.com/a/6V7Xb
Apart from the explanation for the checkered pattern and for his interpretation of Fifteen Rows to the Ground, everything else convinces me enough.
BUT that guy didn't point out something also quite relevant. That next to the place he mentions for the solve, there is also the statue of this guy, whose haircut/nose/puffed eyelids closely resemble those of our IMG#9 guy (and he's also on 10 dollars bills being the former Prime Minister of Canada):
This was also pointed out by user Fox on Q4T 11 years ago.
So I asked on Facebook group "The Secret: A Treasure Hunt Byron Preiss" if anyone could prove that New Orleans (from verse #2) could also be matching poem #5, and user Jennifer Gaskin replied that to her New Orleans was #7.
Assuming she was right, I took the city commonly associated to poem #7 and tried to see if it could fit with poem#5, so that Montreal from 5 could be matched with #2 as I believe it is, and New Orleans could be linked with poem #7 as Jennifer was suggesting.
And guess what?
BINGO!
This is the most relevant sequence of hints I've ever found!
Poem 5
Line 3: You'll see an arch of lights
I browsed for San Francisco + Arc Light.
Turns out there are new apartments under that name. But the company was established in 1888. That's quite a long way back! How is it possible? Turns out that the apartments have been built on a previous
HUGE and PECULIAR
California Electric Light Company warehouse.
Unfortunately I could not find any picture BUT these descriptions are quite matching to me>
Google books, "Historic Walks in San Francisco: 18 Trails Through the City's Past, page 381:
https://books.google.it/books?redir_esc=y&hl=it&id=SMuQi_WnKyQC&q=arc+light#v=onepage&q=electricity&f=false
And description of the new ArcLight apartments refurbished from the Electricity Company Warehouse:
-----
Lines 4-5: Weight and roots Together saved the site
Again in the book we can clearly see that the Electric Warehouse was a survivor of the terrible San Francisco's earthquake of 1906.
-----
Line 6-7-8: Of Granite walls Wind swept halls Citadel in the night
Try to google citadel+San Francisco. Can you guess it?
Alcatraz. That is THE citadel! And guess what? It's made of granite.
Icing on the cake, if you google Alcatraz+windswept it seems that it is commonly recognized as windswept fortress, there are sooooo many occurrences for this. It can't be a random match. Still not sure about the night. Maybe because at night it's more visible due to the lights.
-----
Still not sure for the rest of the poem, but hey, I have never been to America, I hope you San Franciscans can figure out what wingless bird you have, possibly on the path between the ArcLight buildings and the Alcatraz Island (which is not a long way).
Few hints I've found:
There is not far from the path a quiet small park named Sydney Wanton Square.
Within it there is a penguin sculpture watching the sky (ascending wingless bird)
;
A fountain with 4 pillars which could look like trees, (has been there since the 60's)
and a Pine Tree Obelisk, which unfortunately was built only in '87, but maybe it was placed there to remember a previous ancient tree?
Facing south there is a white stone pillar (water fountain)
or also the Sydney Walton's rock. Now it's greyish, maybe it was white before?
Anyway there's still enough space to count 15 feet and dig.
Or maybe it is about pioneer park and this weird looking 4stars+moon water fountain?
Only San Franciscans can unravel the mystery!
Oh, I forgot.
Getting back to Montreal solve: if it is really matching verse two, guess what is the anagram for:
Gnomes admire/Fays delight?
Fays hid Montreal Gem.
Now it's Jennifer's time to push for the New Orleans' solve, since she was right: all the pieces are finally falling into place!
Sorry for my English, I'm a non native
Happy digging!
Delilah84
Sorry, I was (and still am) sleep deprived. The right anagram would be something like: Dig! Montreal hides Fays' gem!
Mister EZ

Just to clarify....you're saying:
Image 9 pairs with verse 2
Image 7 pairs with verse 7
and.....
Image 1 pairs with verse 5, with much of your post used in an attempt to convince the searchers in San Franscisco that using verse 7 is (might be) incorrect.
Is that about the gist of it?
(Love the anagram, btw, even with the added punctuation.)
=]
Delilah84
Yeah, I'd say that's pretty much it, thanks for the recap. I know I was kinda messy and confusing, but I was not entirely in myself and sleep deprived after the entire night and morning doing restless researches.
And, as I also stated in FB comments, I'm not willing to prove that New Orleans IS verse 7, that was just a suggestion which came from a user and led me to other thoughts.
Some others suggest there's no way NOLA can be any other verse. I just said that it was a better match for MTL than V5 ever was. I'll keep searching for other MTL possible matches.
My main focus for this thread is about San Francisco and the match with V5. And up to you to decide if it's fitting, I cannot get there and I'll be happy if anyone else wants to progress from where I left.
And thanks for the anagram's appreciation, even if it turns out that V2 is still NOLA related, that was a Is This For Real moment hehe

Delilah, I am only 2 hours from San Francisco. I have been open for sometime on a different verse to match image 1. I’ve been spending most of my time in research trying to match something concrete in the image to something on the ground. I like your idea and will look into it more. Thank you.
Its funny that you should point to this park, I looked at this area about 3 days ago (thought I saw street blocks matching the blocks on the dress). Anyway, thought I'd add a little more to your verse 5 - image 1 link:
The part of the verse "
Beneath the only standing member
" could relate to the only standing building member of the old produce market that used to be there:
https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/art ... 106142.php
Also, in that image you will notice that the 2 stacked double-decker freeway (The Embarcadero Freeway) that stood there until 1989 and would have been visible from that park. Maybe a link to the Lane Two twenty two:

Delilah84
Thanks for the feedback and the addiction!
Interesting theory, anyway for the standing member of the forest I would keep it more simple, as in something actually tree-shaped or wooden or similar.
As far as regards the lanes, it would make sense if those two roads were named "Lane" something, according to the Japanese podcast...

Josh, sorry to bother you, but what verse and image pairing did you use for Montreal? I feel like if all the established verse and image pairings were correct, we would have found more casks, or the casks there have been removed over time. I like to hear ideas that are well supported but different from the established ones. Don't get me wrong. Some of the established ones, such as Houston or Milwaukee seem really correct to me.
JoshCornell
i reccommend looking at the post about it...pretty indisputable to me. beyond reasonable doubt.

The work of "squaring the circle" is just wonderful, and I dig (if I may write it !), anyway, love what was published in these lines by terrific and very clever

.
Once more, it is so bad that a few posts after so many good ideas, they are spoilt but the fantasist (mythomane) megalomaniac Josh Bullshit, you know, the crazy man who found everything in just time for a wink but just digged out a big nothing.
To be frank, this silly mad folk scored a lot :
- deciphered riddles : 0
- treasures or casques found yet : 0 (and probably during next centuries : still 0)
- megalomania mark - from 0 to infinite - is : infinite
Listen, Josh Dwarf Brain : do you really read and understand what you are writing ? Do you really believe in all of your rather stupid ideas and statements ?
Did you consider about meeting a psychiatrist ?
I always appreciate the replies of Goldengate : I couldn't do better, just copy and paste, so he is 100% right as for me.
Back to Josh Nothing : can you belt it, put a sock in it, in other words : SHUT UP FOREVER. A lot of people are fed up with your delirium. And others think it very much but don't want to repeat what has been said by others : you deserve a great contempt, that's all.
May be you should train with the easiest games of books for young children ? And please don't cheat : if you find something ( yes, Goldengate, "you can say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one" ), we will be sure you first read the solution !
JoshCornell
hahahahahahahahahah
Meteor
"ahahahah...ahahah... etc." Pity.
I was quite sure of it : this foolish is for the best an autist and for the worst an idiot (and I really can't be more accurate !)
Back to our quest, I believe to have solved today the black drawing over the fleur-de-lis. It is quite easy when you have deciphered WHY the "legeater" looks more like a dog than a cat.
It is a pity to looking like in a dead end, even after understanding most of the Image 9 in nearly every detail for (quite) sure. I wrote "quite", just because a treasure hunter must be HUMBLE until he or she dig out a casque. No comment about those who (believe they) deciphered everything in a few seconds.
I am full speed on it, and I don't sleep a lot... This is a VERY difficult challenge, and even if it is being clearer everyday, the end of every hunt is more than hard (once more, WHY did PB, or better said for me BP, called it "a treasure hunt" when there are 12 to solve ?)
Can one imagine that after
36 years
, NO ONE can be sure 100% to pair the 10 left Images with the left 10 Verses ? And even not to be sure of the 10 places (cities) for sure ?
To be frank, I can bring you on a trail of any pair of Image/Verse in the most popular cities found, but even in others !
If I had time enough left, I would take a bet that I am able to find a solution to any Image, of any big city, with any Verse.
Do you want to challenge ? If the bet is at least 1000 US$, I take it with anybody after both of us let the dough in a lawyer safe or something equivalent.
BP, in y mind, did a very good job, full of traps, and he did it well, may be too much, because it is impossible at first to know if some very clever hunters like Josh (the well-known mytho) or myself (having solved a lot of treasure hunts in Europe) can find everything very fast... or not.
Of course, he happens to die too early (it is always too early anyway) BUT I think he should have given some inputs or hints earlier. Well, I wrote myself some treasure hunts in France, and when you realize that there is not any find from 1993 until 2004, you must think about giving some helps to hunters. I still wonder why he didn't give the full solutions about Chicago or even Cleveland ? Being pragmatic, I suppose there would have been good opportunities to print and sell more books, with the solutions of the first discoveries... adding some helps, even "negative" ones, like : "there is no casque in the State of..." But he didn't, and "chose" to die in a stupid car crash (because car crashes are always stupid). What a pity !
Remember if I told you before, but I am a MD, and life or death, when the latter happens, it doesn't care too much for me. Sorry.
I am wondering if I won't give up "the secret", just because such a long task, done by so many brains, during so many years, could be never solved.
I will probably contact John Palencar if I may, not to ask him to give me any hint, but to suggest that he could think about doing so, may be every year on the day PB died, as a mark of deep respect to him. And to have his fantastic dream been done one day. With everybody applauding him for the very good riddles. And why not to check the places of where was a day casques, if unfortunately they are not there anymore because so many years after, a lot of things had changed. Or just to say : guys, carry on ! There is no reason why it has moved ! In another way, give a little hint like : "did you really notice the importance of that detail in verse or image ?". Another thing could be hunters not to have any more doubt : "yes, Image X is paired with Verse Y !"
In my mind, it is not a bad idea, because I think it is very stupid if the game is never solved and nobody knows the answers. Imagine all the time they spent to imagine this ? And for a nearly big nothing ?
I can PROMISE AND SWEAR that I will MYSELF offer THE GEM of all the 10 hunts unsolved yet to any winner. I fortunately don't care with money, but dying without the solutions is definitely a torment...
If the guy who contacted John Palencar last April could explain it to him, may be he would approve these ideas...AND OBVIOUSLY I WOULD LET JOHN PALENCAR ALL THE GEMS TO FUTURE WINNERS WITHOUT ANY DOUBT OF HIS SINCERITY.
I look forward your opinion about it...
Best or kind regards,
Meteor
forest_blight
Palencar has made it abundantly clear that he doesn't want to hear any such nonsense. Leave the man alone.
Meteor
Leaving him alone : I agreed 100 %... at first ;
Talking about "any such nonsense". Who are you to say that ? I wonder WHERE is the nonsense in what I wrote. You should read twice or more what you write before publishing it. Your opinion is quite stupid as you feel being like in his head. May be the man can give and opinion according to argues he never heard before ?
Are you Mr Palencar himself ? No. Of course I respect he wants to forget about it so long after, but may be he didn't think of these ideas.
I think you just irritated me a lot. That's why I won't do what you suggest. No sorry, you decree. I am not your soldier, and I bet my rank in the army is far from your.
Then I will do what I suggested could be done, according of doing exactly what you decided that was wrong. Thanks for making me take the good decision !
Meteor
Thank you very much, Goldengate.
YOU found the right words to explain it, without looking like a guru.
So, I will not do what I planned at first. May be I send one day to the illustrator a message of congratulations for his talent, as myself I draw like a child of 5. And it is not sure at all I will do that.
I don't know if he is still working, but, according to what he has done, I know a friend of mine looking for someone of his kind for a special job (NOTHING TO SEE WITH THE SECRET). It would be for an advert in such a style of artist.
I am very happy when I read your posts, just because I know before reading them that you are of the best common sense, savvy, with a horse sense. And both of us (in my humble opinion) really hate the mythomaniacs...
Happy hunting ! My wish is to discover a casque. Obviously, it is the wish of all of us. But, what a great pleasure for me if it could be done by one or two European hunters ! Just for fun because we are not so bright in english as you are ! Some kind of nice challenge anyway...
Wishing you all the best, best regards.

It would have to be a heck of an ad. He's a highly respected artist and illustrator these days, having designed the cover for books like Eragon and many others.

Meteor,
after reading everything you've posted, I have some questions for you, say you did get a hold of Palencar, and he's willing to talk to you, how will you react if he start laughing at you and called you stupid ?
What's gonna happen after you embarrass yourself ?
next question, you recall any hard impact or strike in your head when you're a kid? Any brain concussions you didn't pay attentions to and didn't tell your parents?
If not, you're probably born with intellectual disabilities...and the syndrome gets worst as you grew, but you didn't know and now you're probably at a very late stage of moderate mental retardation.
Please don't take this offensively, I was just trying to help you and hope you realize you need serious medical treatments immediately. Because if you "choose" to ignore it, it'll keep getting worst to a point where.....you can't even tell what's food and what's feces anymore, which I have a strong feeling you already experiencing
by the way, I can see how money is not a problem for you, because you probably don't have any.
Yet, most public hospital will still provide you with the treatments you need even without medical insurance.
good luck, I hope you well.

I'm not really sure if you're serious or not. But I hope you're not.
And I hope you know what makes sense and what doesn't.
There is also this benefit in brags, that the braggart is unconsciously expressing his own ideal.
To further push him to the edge, we must humor him by all means, draw it all out, and hold him to it.
If you wish others to speak well of you. You should never speak well of yourself.

Not only are the poorest people the most generous but they don't expect anything in return, least of all recognition from others by means of showing off or posting a humble brags like so many from below average society does and you can just identify these people through the abundance of things they post, literally the story they tells, showing off what they've done for the "less fortunate." If he have to boast about what he do for a living to attracts attraction or approval, that means he's basically seeking the wrong kind of people for it here. Because it has nothing to do with who he is or was but has everything to do with what he do.
The fact is, for him to brag about the shits he claims he did and the shits he claims he had accomplished shows how lacking and ignorance he is. Yet, seeing you actually believe someone like him can "cheat" his way to $400000 in Europe were equally appalling....

Hunters, hunters, we're losing the trail here. Delilah84 solved it up until "I hope you San Franciscans can figure out what wingless bird you have, possibly on the path between the ArcLight buildings and the Alcatraz Island (which is not a long way). "
So now we just need to break up all these arguments, pack it up, ignite the spark of our collective brains, stoke the fires of creativity, then inhale the fresh air of logical thought... then we can somehow... some way... think of something or someone that gets really high in san Francisco but isn't a bird.

I did find a modern picture of the old California Electric Light Company warehouse at 178 Townsend. Shown below during recent re-purposing. It had a stepped arch facade. (Not sure what those tabs are - maybe lights at one time)? And as stated above, was used to warehouse the cities newfangled "arc lights."
