verse 8

Postby catherwood » Sat Apr 12, 2003 4:10 am

i'm on a roll, I guess I'll start a new thread for each verse, to organize our work.  And I might as well post the full text for reference, then begin the brainstorming in a reply.

Verse 8:
View the three stories of Mitchell
As you walk the beating of the world
At a distance in time
From three who lived there
At a distance in space
From woman, with harpsichord
Silently playing
Step on nature
Cast in copper
Ascend the 92 steps
After climbing the grand 200
Pass the compass and reach
The foot of the culvert
Below the bridge
Walk 100 paces
Southeast over rock and soil
To the first young birch
Pass three, staying west
You'll see a letter from the country
Of wonderstone's hearth
On a proud, tall fifth
At its southern foot
The treasure waits.

"View the three stories of Mitchell"

1) an author named Mitchell (first or last name?) with 3 stories on display somehow.
2) a 3-story high building,
-a) named the Mitchell Building, or something similar
-b) in the town of mitchell,
-c) or in Mitchell Square or Street

"Ascend the 92 steps"

Only 92 steps total?  That should be an obvious landmark.

"After climbing the grand 200"

I'm tempted to look for Grand CC or someother play on words for 200.

"You'll see a letter from the country
Of wonderstone's hearth"

Another searchable phrase?

the opening sentence of this V seems to give us a general location.  3 stories of Mitchell seems to try to make us think of an author named Mitchell......one Margaret Mitchell perhaps?  But 3 stories?  She was famous for Gone With The Wind but did she have 2 other famous works?  Not really.  So, with a little investigation, I located the house she did most of her writing in in Atlanta GA.  Yup, you guessed it, it is a 3 story house... and it is on the Historical Registry.  I am still trying to figure out the rest ( last part becoming very precise in locating the casque)...we may just have to be there to follow these steps.  Are you up for it Egg?  I'm leaning towards a large park near the house called Peidmont Park.  This, however; is just a gut feeling.

Here is Mitchell Hall, in Milwaukee.

It looks like it's 3 stories high, and was named in honor of 3 people.

Wonderstone originates from Africa (South Africa).

However, it is also found in the western U.S.

Could this part of the verse just refer to seeing the letters "S" or "A"? (South Africa -- the COUNTRY of wonderstone's hearth)

and the building houses the university's Dept. of Africanology.

Would the casque be "buried" inside a building?  Walk the halls, find a clue?

Dwarves' treasure: purple Amethyst,
Imperial star of Germany

Milwaukee is known for it's large set of German immigrants.
Maybe the Amethyst picture goes with this verse?

I was searching for things with 92 steps.  There are quite a bit!  The most notable is "El Castillo" in Mexico (it IS in North America):
http://www.mexperience.com/inmexico/photos/10chichen.htm
I am going to post this under Image 8 as well --- the one that looks like it's in the desert.  Please take a moment to look at the pictures of the nearby columns --- they look strikingly similar to Image 8.

However, if you look at the verse, it appears that after climbing these 92 steps, you then continue your journey.  So, with "El Castillo," or any structure that has 92 steps on it, you have nowhere to go --- so it seems that the verse does not apply here.

So I started digging for paths that have 92 steps.  There is an "Alta Vista" path in Santa Barbara, California, but in order to determine if it's the right one, someone would have to go there.  Here is the site that has it (among many other paths).  Just do a "find" on the page for "92 steps."
http://www.internettime.com/bpwa/latest_paths.htm

Finally, here's another place that has 92 steps --- look at the entry for Aug. 11.  http://www.roamingamerica.com/travelog/michigan/michigan.html

As for "the grand 200," it could refer to 200,000 of something (200 grand), or maybe 200 of something which are referred to as "Grand," such as 200 Grand Pianos.

View the three stories of Mitchell
As you walk the beating of the world

That reminds me of a Foucault Pendulum, which illustrates the Earth's rotation as it swings back and forth.  We see them in science musuems and planetariums.

At a distance in space
From woman, with harpsichord
Silently playing

Jan Vermeer, The Concert (c1665-6)

Vermeer’s The Concert (one of the greatest of his remaining 36 paintings) was stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum, Boston on 18 March, 1990 – the biggest heist in US history. The thieves dressed as policemen and convinced security they were checking the museum. The priceless work pictures a man playing the lute, a young woman playing the harpsichord and another singer.

So was it still in Boston in 1982?

I know, I know.  We don't want to bring in another city.  However, I post this here for what it's worth.  The 3-story house of Margaret Mitchell:
http://www.gwtw.org/mitchellhouse.html

Perhaps the verse may be referring to books instead of floors?

I'm with you Egg.  I've thought all along (& believe I was the one who first introduced the 3 level home of MM in Atlanta to the boards) that this V is for Atlanta....to be more precise...my gut says the casque is buried somewhere in Piedmont Park.... ::)

Oops.  Sorry, Fox --- I forgot that you had posted that previously.  Well, hopefully it is NOT in Atlanta, because that would mean that 2 of our current 13 possible locations are wrong.

(Chicago, Cleveland, Boston, New Orleans, Charleston, San Francisco, North Carolina, Florida, New York City, Houston, Salt Lake City, St. Louis, Canada)

yes I know.....we really have to find another casque to start narrowing our list or else find another almost concrete theory (which I believe Houston to be).

Are there any other famous Mitchells that have either written 3 known stories (margaret wrote more) or live in a very popular 3 story house?  Atlanta is still very high on my list for this one for the moment  :P

most probably meaningless but chapter 67 of A Treatise of Human Nature by the Scottish philosopher/historian David Hume speaks both of a distance in time and a distance in space.   ???
