Hi everyone,
I am new around here...I have been lurking for a couple of days....
Anyway, Here is my lead,...maybe this was covered already? I have not read every single post....
I believe that Verse 10 is referring to Columbus Circle in Manhattan (I can explain my thoughts later)
& P12 has some images that might refer to the Maine Monument across the street.
http://www.centralpark2000.com/database/maine_monument.html
[Eagle, Woman & rectangle are all present)
Clearly there are somethings that don't fit...yet..(The domes)
Also, The Columbus Circle has been renovated and there has been a lot of construction in this spot since 1983, so even if this proved to be true the treasure may have been lost or damaged. Or the "soil" may have been paved over?
I am in the area and will probably check this out with my own eyes.
Anyway, just a thought from a newbie...

Bazile suggested this last July. I think it's very promising. We need to do some research to find photos of what this place looked like 25 years ago.

Is this IN Central Park? Yes, BP definitively said that NO casques were buried in Central Park.

"At the entrance of Merchants' Gate, the
main gateway into Central Park, stands
the colossal marble statue and fountain of the
Maine Monument."
So technically it could be "outside" the park, or it could be barely "within the park" but a good lead to something outside.
Please go ahead and explain your thoughts..
Would love to hear them.
Good Hunting

Well, Columbus Circle is outside of the park in the middle of broadway and 8th...it is a "round-about" type of thing with a fountain, and the Maine monument is across the street at the entrance to the park... so it is visible from the circle (I'm glad that I found that post about nothing being in Central Park because I started to waste a lot of time looking up things inside of the park and there is just sooooo much there.)
If not in Columbus Circle, my other thought was the "mid-ground" on Broadway. Between the northbound and southbound lanes there are patches of grassy soil, an "island". (Isle of B?) I don't know....
and it can also be argued that the Maine Monument is not "inside" of the park since it is at its gate...
I think you would be stopped immediately if you had a shovel in hand and started digging around though..ha...plus, like I mentioned earlier, there has been a ton of construction and digging at this spot so even if something was once there it might be gone now.
There is a major subway hub underneath this spot, Lincoln Center is within sight.....there is a lot going on in this area.....
maybe I'll take a stroll this weekend...

These are some things that I've been working on from the verse. I wasn't sold on the image linking it to NYC; but the verse brought me back to this idea. So, here goes:
Of all the romance retold
Men of tales and tunes
Cruel and bold
Seen here
By eyes of old
(I think this is in reference to the acting guild that was founded in NYC, of which Edwin Forrest (see below) was a famous member; tales and tunes cruel and bold, etc...)
Stand and listen to the birds
Hear the cool, clear song of water
(the Maine Monument statue is build atop a fountain/bird bath where this would be possible)
Harken to the words:
Freedom at the birth of a century
Or May 1913
(The Spanish American war took place in 1898, "at the turn of a century", and the most famous ship was the USS Maine which was sunk, resulting in the deaths of numerous American soldiers. The Maine Monument at Columbus Circle was revealed in May of 1913 in memory of the event.)
Edwin and Edwina named after him
(Edwin and Edwina Booth were named after Edwin Forrest; a famous 19th century NY actor who famously played Othello. Edwin was known for his portrayal of Hamlet in NY theatre as well.)
Or on the eighth a scene
Where law defended
(eigth avenue runs directly into Columbus Circle, and from there the Maine Monument, a tribute to where the soldier's defended Cuba's independence 'where law defended' is clearly viable.)
Between two arms extended (this is pretty self explanatory when looking at the statue)
Below the bar that binds
Beside the long palm's shadow
(this I am unsure of; perhaps the "bar that binds" is a reference to iron, which is found in abundence in the area. There are iron adorments on the statue, as well as an iron fence at the entrance to Central Park.)
Embedded in the sand
Waits the Fair remuneration
White house close at hand.
*beside the long palm's shadow and white house close at hand do not seem to fit like the rest of the verses. I think that an inspection in person might reveal some more information. This is a long shot, but perhaps at 11AM in November, the shadow(s) made by the hand atop the statue rests on the casque's buriel place.
