I just learned of this. Josh Gates is now in the hunt. Watch the first 10 minutes or so. https://youtu.be/nvegtRYIsq0

mindydaile

It's interesting that he feels so sure about some of the locations (Boston for example).

The new episode of Expedition Unknown featuring "The Secret" will air January 17 on the Travel Channel. http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertain ... story.html

maskit wrote:: The new episode of Expedition Unknown featuring "The Secret" will air January 17 on the Travel Channel. http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertain ... story.html thanks for the date. I see the new season starting tonight but airing episodes # 5 and 6 this week and next. It's not unusual for a show like this to air in a different order than production numbering.

JamesRenner

Bumping this as a friendly reminder, Expedition Unknown airs tonight on the Travel Channel (9 p.m.) Should be some new info for you all!

whitewolfarctic

Just watched the episode. Never heard of this before but I figured I'd scan over some stuff to see if anything might be in Richmond. Would love if something lead to Maymont Park because I really love that place.

I think I've already been driven crazy. There are so many possibilities. This is really cool. Picture 3 is the most interesting to me, but maybe because a lot of you guys connected it to the Outer Banks which I spent a lot of my childhood at. A very special place for me.

KROMAGNUM

Just finished watching this show with my wife. Didn't think she would be interest in this. Great show this was. I was so certain that they would unearth a cask at the Wisconsin location. It's been so long since I was interested in The Secret. I shelved it years ago. Great location hunt in NYC. It's got to be one of the hardest puzzles. Tried years ago.

WhiteRabbit

Cool, nice one guys.

Hirudiniforme

burnstyle wrote:: You never know! Welcome to the hunt. FFS, Burnstyle... really? Why would you tell people "you never know" where they are? Aren't you supposed to be an informed one, being on Renner's podcast and all?

erexere

Enough "work" has been done scrubbing the Cleveland and Chicago puzzles for insights into the other puzzles. What is being proposed in any of the other locations is all In the "you never know" category. Would be nice to see/hear Gates, Renner, PBwiki, or podcasters actually get into really strong territory and pull a real find.

Doghousereiley

I just saw the last part with the dig in St Augustine. They used a long pole to probe the ground. Has anyone else tried this method in other locations where soil composition is different that Floridas sandy loam? Texas soil is clayish and I found it very difficult to get deep enough to get 1 foot down

Fenix wrote:: ...attempt to defame JM and Burnstyle... suicide... LOL. You have no idea what I am doing. http://thesecretofbyronpreiss.com/wp-content/uploads/

JamesRenner

It's really really weird that you would hijack that name and pretend you're a part of the documentary. You should have just done your own thing. It's strange behavior.

Hirudiniforme

My face when i put the tile there..

JamesRenner

Sorry I thought that was John Michaels. Is it?

tanban

I was hoping Brian Zinn and company would dig on the other side of the green fence closer to the exit. If Preiss really did dawn construction uniforms and dig its likely he didn't venture too far into the park. It fits well with the verse because you can line the fountain and planetarium up look over the fence and see "teardrops in moonlight".

Hirudiniforme

JamesRenner wrote:: Sorry I thought that was John Michaels. Is it?

JamesRenner

Why would he do that?

Hirudiniforme

JamesRenner wrote:: Why would he do that? It could be because he tends to usurp other people's ideas and claim it to be his own. You know anybody like that?

Erpobdelliforme

Unknown: It's really really weird that you would hijack that name and pretend you're a part of the documentary. There's a documentary? Do tell.

JamesRenner

I shot a documentary on The Secret in 2014/2015. We had to take a break from it for a bit but there's a rough cut now and we hope to get it out this year to festivals. Lots of great interviews.

Hirudiniforme

Erpobdelliforme wrote:: There's a documentary? Do tell. wew.

burnstyle

Hirudiniforme wrote:: FFS, Burnstyle... really? Why would you tell people "you never know" where they are? Aren't you supposed to be an informed one, being on Renner's podcast and all? Because "you never know" is more encouraging to new people than "you have no idea what you are talking about. I want people new people to look at this with fresh minds... Maybe they will spot something we have never seen before.

WhiteRabbit

Welcome to new visitors from Expedition Unknown! Note that there is an initiation ceremony for full participation in this forum. You'll need to read all 123 pages of the thread for the Boston image, and then complete a short test.

Erpobdelliforme

Unknown: and then complete a short test Fortunately, the test consists of only five, um three questions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMxWLuOFyZM

JamesRenner wrote:: Why would he do that? Hi, I actually did that. I own the domain, about 6 different versions of it... Including misspellings. And various other domains related to the secret. I bought them about 4 years ago. I own a crap ton of domains, me owning one the same name as your film is oddly enough, coincidence. I did have the idea of creating a repository of images relating to the puzzle when I first bought them... But I never really got around to it. Life gets in the way sometimes. The site, nor the podcast has ever suggested it was part of the documentary, or tied in any way to it... Not through me at least. I can't speak for John. It was hosted on that domain because it was convenient. But you could have also gotten to it from any of the other domains... They all point to the same place. I'm not sure why that specific domain was chosen to be shared. I mean... I can guess... We both can, you know? And I'm sure we would both be right. You asked John to move it so I blocked it from that domain as gesture of mutual respect. I don't feel there is any hostility between us, a simple whois search would have gotten you in touch with me if you had any questions. I'm not hard to find. I'm also not really known for being confrontational, and I don't buy into the cliques that seem to pop up with this puzzle. I try to work with everyone. Bickering back and forth only hurts the puzzle and the community in the long run... So I try to stay out of it. And thrasher, you being able to read a public css file isn't all that impressive to me. The site is just a repository of publicaly avalible stuff. The pages are only password protected because they aren't in a format that is helpful to the general public. They wouldn't have been password protected at all if you hadn't wanted to share them with everyone as some sort of weird example of how bad I am at creating a site? Shit man I can't even figure out what goal you were trying to accomplish. But thanks for trying to... I dunno... Rattle me? Honestly I don't understand your hostility, I don't think I have ever really interacted with you, I don't know who you are, and judging from your general attitude I'm not sure if I want to. Maybe you don't like john, and that extends to me because I co-host a show with him? If so that's kind of a dumb reason. Honestly it doesn't really matter. You do you bro.

Nah. I won't go there. It's not worth it.

Hmmm I can see where that comment came from. I switched registrars and made a comment about it. I don't think anyone knew about the domains before that. It's cool I have receipts I'm not trying to start a fight here. That's why I removed my post. Simply trying to explain. Like I said. I try not to get in the middle of the drama, I just seem to have found myself there this time. Thanks for not showing the lower portion of the who is publicaly btw.

Probably best just to stay out of it. Just let me troll as I see fit. And you're welcome. I may just be some css-reading noob (or not), but I ain't doxxing you (as tempting as it was).

I just wanted to say that it was so much fun watching those of you who were on the Expedition Unknown. I loved that Josh Gates said that is probably his favorite expedition of all times. I think he could do a tv series on The Secret alone and it be a huge hit, especially if it was highly interactive with the fans.

catherwood

Bumping the original thread to announce a reair of the show tonight (Sept.11) on the Travel Channel. It is one of their "enhanced" episodes, so the title is now "Extra Finds: The Secret" airing at 9pm Eastern.

catherwood

Fenix wrote:: Cat- Where did you see that this is an "enhanced" episode? I use TVGuide.com (which shares the same guide data source my TiVo uses) and it says so in the episode description. Additionally, the "Extra Finds" in the episode title indicates that it *might* have updated info or previously deleted scenes, but *could* simply mean they added a social media link in the middle. *shrug* I agree that the Travel Channel simply says episode #4.01 on their website grid, but that could be lazy uploads. Other sources disagree, such as tvlistings.gracenote.com which gets their data from the networks and says tonight is NEW, but The Futon Critic which is usually very accurate doesn't show *any* episode airing tonight. http://www.thefutoncritic.com/showatch/expedition-unknown/listings/ *shrug* I will record it, just in case. I probably won't even notice if they have added anything to the original airing. (Maybe I'll ask Renner if he knows?)

Scrappy929

Tonight, 6p PST Travel Channel.

jayheedan1

Xfinity has it listed as “new” episode titled extras:the secret

Mr merit

So Josh is on the hunt ....which one of us Is him .There is no way he's not here if he looks at the images every night like us .

jayheedan1

Nothing new they just added a few tweets on the screen like a bad version of pop up videos.

forest_blight

Oh good - still 10 casques to find.

MERLIN

Mr merit wrote:: So Josh is on the hunt ....which one of us Is him .There is no way he's not here if he looks at the images every night like us . OMG!!!.....CORNELL!

jayheedan1

Not sure that is the case I just watched the episode and Gates got a lot of things wrong. One example at the end of the episode he says 10 treasures up for grabs and talks about one in Roanoke Virginia. Anyone reading the threads would know island of Roanoke NC not city of Roanoke VA.

Erpobdelliforme

Unknown: Oh good - still 10 casques to find And if the past is any indication, lots of eager new posters to help us find them.

Spiritr

so what exactly is enhanced?

jayheedan1

There is nothing enhanced. The pop-ups mostly congratulate and praise Josh (one saying if anyone deserves to find one it’s him; as if he’s spent decades deciphering clues). A few “fun facts” about the city or parks if read them correctly. Not worth watching if you saw the original or rerun airing.

cms

I found it interesting that his daughters said they were in the US , so I guess that would throw the Canada idea out the window for image 9 eh ?

cms

I agree . The leg eater lamppost a few years back was the only thing tying it there . Haven’t seen anything credible since .

No coffee this morning ? Yes I’ve been around awhile , just under another name . Seems you missed the obvious clue when I said awhile . You also missed the opportunity to nice . And no I’ve never thought there was one buried in Canada and glad to hear that’s been confirmed.

Scrappy929

Fenix wrote:: Yes, there is definitely no casque in Canada. Please, everybody, stop searching here. They are all in Merica! It's yuge news. St Louis Post Dispatch, 25 Oct 1982... BP states, "Off and on for nine months this year, I traveled this country and Canada, hiding the stuff." Even in the Japanese translation, he mentioned traveling to Canada. In the book, it says, “Across North America,...” not across the U.S. What’s funny is, some people will analyze the newspaper article like, nah he didn’t mean this, he meant that... Seruously!? It’s a newspaper article where he is quoted. Face value... not another cryptic verse. However, everyone is free to believe what they want. I prefer to go with hard evidence.

Scrappy929

Fenix wrote:: Fake news... I knew I would get at least one bite... Yep... fake news... Only that part of it though, right? Guess the Japanese version and translation is fake as well. Oh, and all of the printed versions of The Secret have a typo... Should have been, "Across the U.S., ..." 2 different credible sources say there is one in Canada and the book says North America, not U.S.

Harley Quinn

Wasn't there an interview with BP were he stated that he had a hard time getting through customs with a shovel and strange items?

Erpobdelliforme

Unknown: What’s funny is, some people will analyze the newspaper article like, nah he didn’t mean this, he meant that... And for good reason: "At least one gem is situated 'within reasonable driving distance' of all residents of the United States and Canada" "The stones that are worth the most will be the hardest to find" And so on and so forth. Which is not to say there wasn't a casque buried in Montreal, Canada. Pretty darn sure there was. Not because Preiss confirmed that in an email, or said it to a reporter, but because the puzzle's methodology demands that we know certain things. And the casque cities is one of those things. In fact, it's Step 1.

Scrappy929

Goldengate wrote:: The US only thing was a silly mistake in the episode and a sillier argument to be having here. If BP gave any one single solid clue to a casque's general location at the time the book came out, it was that he buried one in Canada. He mentioned it in multiple articles. Guys... Expedition Unknown is not a hard hitting, heavily fact checked documentary series. It's an entertaining show, but to credit it with being a stalwart of credible knowledge on this hunt is a mistake. A segment or story producer with limited research time and heavy deadlines due on other episodes wrote the dialogue and pop up material. They scanned the forums, reached out to names like Brian and Andy, Rob, Renner and JJP, then crammed it into their shooting schedule while racing to meet the unrelenting deadlines of preproduction through post for the rest of their order before it went to air. I don't want to bust any bubbles, but Expedition Unknown ain't Ken Burns. Also, I've been to Roanoke, VA several times. It's a really nice town, but to think of it being a significant enough spot to bury a casque is laughable. Exactly. Well said GG.

cms

Well Fenix, it wasn’t any reference as to anything Canada . It’s what I usually say and have done so since I lived in the U.P. Years back . Just stuck with me . Sadly you’ve turned what I thought would be a good catch up to see how the quest had progressed since the time I had followed it . Not sure how a group of people that seem to have all the answers haven’t dug up a casque yet . Thanks for welcoming a returning hunter . Nothing but rudeness since the first reply .

burnstyle

Yup... I think I know who this is now.

Erpobdelliforme

(getting the thread back to the topic in the subject line) I started watching the enhanced episode and quickly discovered that the pop-ups were covering parts of the screen that might actually be of interest (to me). I'm glad I kept the original in my DVR folder. Yeah, I might fast-forward thru this one just to giggle at the comments --and scour the tweets for Twitter handles to investigate -- but I won't waste the disk space after that.

Unknown: Hey, followers of The Secret of Byron Preiss... rumor is Josh Gates is back on the trail of the buried keys. You'll all want to check out next season's Expedition Unknown!! be warned, a new season might bring more insanity. per this tweet by James Renner today :

Doghousereiley

maybe the moratorium on new members might not be such a bad thing

phrabbott

Seems to me it already brought the insanity via the “Message from JM” thread, and this time it’s not the new people, but the old.

BINGO

phrabbott wrote:: Seems to me it already brought the insanity via the “Message from JM” thread, and this time it’s not the new people, but the old. I’ve learned more valuable information from these “old” people fighting than most of us “new” people have contributed combined. Truth be told, I am interested in seeing the new episode. I have no hopes of success or anything Mr Gates has to move the hunt forward, just really curious to see if they got another pass to view the original paintings.

phrabbott

Wasn't intended as an old timer put down... the new episode has literally brought out some insanity among the (apparent) fame and fortune seekers among us. That being said, I still have to see the first Expedition Unknown episode. Was waiting for it to come to hulu, but as they still are only up to Season 2...

Erpobdelliforme

Unknown: I have no hopes of success or anything Mr Gates has to move the hunt forward. Rumor has it that he was digging in White Point Gardens, the place that used to have the capstan of the USS Maine. Remember the Maine? Apparently Mr. Gates did not, because rumor also has it that he was using Verse 5 (white stone, 12 paces, west side) instead of Verse 6. To the best of my knowledge, nothing was found. Perhaps he was triangulating off of the incorrect white stone.
