Short story, a guy dug up a fake casque in GGP. He made some claims here that he had found the actual casque. Hasn’t been heard from since. Everything else being discussed is up to you to decide if it is important. The French Dr. Gay uses the name meteor here. I thought you guys were close internet friends? Can’t believe he wouldn’t include you in the search party. Especially in your own back yard.

Came across this whilst looking for some historical information on San Francisco on the wiki site. Looks like a user by the name of Kaspius (with a French email address) started inquiring what material the Casque's key was made from back in August last year?

Meteor joined the forum on August 14th, 2018. And in his introductory post two months later ( viewtopic.php?f=32&t=7363&p=147030#p147030 ) he claimed that he had been working on the puzzle for two months. So, more circumstantial evidence that the man's intentions were fraudulent almost from the beginning, and that "Kaspius" and "Meteor" were in on this together.

I have to ask the question. After this guy tried to spoof everyone and potentially sully this hunt; Why is anyone giving this time & coverage, and in essence glorifying this prank? Threads on the forums, podcasts, etc....

It also seriously helps dissuade people from trying this in the future.

I was just remembering a different treasure hunt I feverishly worked on in 2010. It didnt involve a hoax or fraud, but it probably involved a lot of the same types of people, desperate in their own way, wanting to have some acknowledgement or recognition. This particular event is really just a case of failure and an example of Occam's Whetstone, what happens when you over sharpen the razor to the extent that it fails due to thinness... The Clock Without a Face was pretty fun. It had to do with some mysterious clock which was rumored to allow one to travel through time once fully assembled. Lots of folks were digging up highway rest areas to recover little jeweled numbered trinkets 1-12, the No.12 being the most elusive. The colorful characters and illustrations in the puzzle book made for a lot of imaginative leads. In my attempt to find the No.12, I assumed it was hidden a little differently than the rest, not buried, but held in some kind of protective custody and like like the Maltese Falcon, required going to some specific drop point. Bogart mailed the Falcon to a post office box, to keep it safe from being found on his person or from being found in his hotel room. To retrieve it he had to just go to the front desk and say his name or box number. I didnt succeed in this effort for the No.12, but I had the pleasure of exchanging many ideas about this hunt with the person who did take that necessary leap about a week or two later, drive to a remote town in California and drop the correct name at the Washington Hotel box office to receive the reward. I was so close...damn. Here's where I went wrong and fell either into a well designed trap or fell under the knife of my own oversharpening. I took several clues mentioned in the book to deduce some basic pieces to the location, which included something to do with Washington, fountains, and time. I found a historic fountain built in 1891 in Washington Park in Portland, Oregon. It was called the "Chiming Fountain" so I thought that was a clever connection to an old fashioned type of clock with chimes. The fountain was made of iron and it had some lettering embossed on the base which included the words "portland.org". This looked strange, because there I was standing there and seeing what could actually be a complete web address on an object built 100 years before the Internet. Apparently org was the old fashioned abbreviation for oregon, which is sometimes ORE or the standard OR. So I investigated the site address, which happened to be owned by someone in NY, but it wasn't currently hosting any webpage, but if I was further interested, I could contact a certain mailing address, so once I climbed up on a step ladder to check the top of the fountain for anything I might've missed and finding nothing, I quickly wrote up my claim, thinking I solved the puzzle, and sent it off my snail mail to the NY postal address. Some time went by and I didnt get a response, and then I heard the news about the puzzle being solved by someone else. It was really fun tho, but not so fun that I felt the need to make a fake to place on my mantel... It's really darn amazing how close we can be yet so far off track when it comes to these treasure hunts. I figure this French dude whether he fell into someone's trap or cooked up his own scheme, had a really good looking solve with that giant pole and step that Brett and maybe others found interest in some months prior. Someone just took things away too far in this case. I still want to know from the authors of TCWAF if they knew of the Chiming Fountain's existence or if that was just a supremely wrong accident of my own "discovery".

Here's the bottom line, I was on the phone with John and Kit Palencar when the photo's came in. Not only did JoEllen Trilling say " I replied that it was not designed by me...it was not part of Byron’s Secret." but John Palencar also confirmed that it was a total fake and he was also overheard saying "what the f**k is that?" The casque given to me to bury for the Tribute was the ORIGINAL CLAY CASQUE which was then cast to pour the plaster molded casques for the hunt. There were no other designs. I don't doubt that Brett and George are drunks, this is unproven so far, and I have no comment, HOWEVER it is proven that the casque dug up by Gerald Gay at Golden Gate Park is unequivocally, a fake. This will probably not dissuade the confidence tricksters from propagating their find. If it's any consolation I will gladly provide a certified statement from the creators that this is a fake, but it shouldn't need to go that far, but we can.

It's sickening to think that he truly believes he's some kind of global treasure hunting super star. Is there some kind law that would not allow back into the country if he pulled a stunt like this?

Meteor sighting...

The season finale of Expedition Unknown airs tonight with an episode about the "Hunt for the Golden Owl" (Sur la trace de la Chouette d'Or) in France. The small clip posted online shows glimpses of two people who look very much like Meteor (Gerald Gay) and his partner, Kaspius. If true, then this explains a lot. Obviously this was filmed months ago and it seems the whole fake casque stunt in San Francisco could have been Meteor's attempt to gain more publicity for himself timed to his appearance on EU. This idea has been suggested all along, so if he is on EU tonight, it would pretty much back up that theory Here are some links to the clip. Two weekends ago during the annual gathering of the Owl searchers, he displayed the fake casque and reportedly showed something he claimed to be the key. During this same weekend, he also participated in a museum sponsored treasure hunt with about 150 entrants in total. Meteor's team was called "The Secret". I don't know where they ended up placing, but I do know they did not come in first or second. Meteor went on to the Golden Owl messageboard and complained that the winning team had been cheating.

Just an update on the Expedition Unknown episode broadcast this evening. I was only half right. Kaspius was interviewed, but Meteor was not.

Just bizarre.
