'''JoEllen Trilling''' (born September 19, 1947)

“Well-established since the 1970s for her mixed-media sculptures featuring lifelike animals and figures in outrageous, mischievous, and wry tableaux, Jo-Ellen Trilling expanded her vision into painting in 2001, inspired in part by the events of September 11th and their aftermath. Soon her oils took on a life of their own.Populated by a cast of animals, toys, and magical beings similar to those in her sculptures, her narrative paintings evoke the fairytales of the Grimm Brothers and Hans Christian Andersen. Their metaphysical aspects suggest the magical world of Alice in Wonderland and The Lord of the Rings.Inviting us in with their seeming innocence and charm, Trilling’s works gradually unfold into a more unsettling and haunting underpinning. Their multiple layers probe the subconscious and reflect the elusive, shifting, and troubling aspects of contemporary experience. While enigmatic, Trilling’s images are also at times allegorical, referring to aspects of the politics and culture of society today.”- Katherine Ashe
==Artistic Career==

Trilling’s paintings and dolls exemplify Magic Realism. Appearances lure and trick with bright colors but incongruous details. Whimsical, Bosch-like hybrid creatures teeter on disturbing. Winged things cling to Grimm forest trees; a live rooster hat glares from a dog doll’s head. Disquieting toys have too-round faces, and ‘steampunk’ horses advance. Strange animals peer through Alice’s looking glass. Jo-Ellen’s works have been avidly sought by private collectors, especially by prominent individuals in the entertainment world, such as Elton John, Carrie Fisher, Billy Crystal, David Letterman, Robin Williams, and Madonna, just to name a few.

Ms. Trilling's sculptures have been the subject of five shows at the Julie Artisans Gallery on Madison Avenue in Man-hattan, where such clients as Elton John, Ellen Burstyn, Cher, Julie Christie and Carrie Fisher have purchased them. Her sculptures have appeared in The Com-plete Book of Stuffed Work, The Beach Boys, Heavy Metal, The Soho Weekly News, Playboy, and Cue; and in the Ren-wick Gallery of the Smithsonian Museum in Washington D.C. She has taught soft sculpture in New York and Kentucky, and her work was featured twice on Bill Bogg's Midday Live television program in New York. She currently resides in New York.[[File:Julie Schafler Dale on Jo-Ellen Trilling - bonus video from STORYTELLERS episode|thumb]]
