The Owl and the Horse (also known as Preliminary #1) is the title given to a sketch by John Jude Palencar, released to the general public on December 17, 2025. It is described as a “Preliminary study for a future painting,” and as such is considered to be the first in a series of Preliminary Sketches by Palencar. It is a monotone drawing created with pencil and/or charcoal on cream paper stock, with a viewable art area of 9.5 inches wide and 7.5 inches high.

Possible connection to The Secret

The image was released soon after the sixth message from the Gift Giver (posted December 15, 2025), which stated:

I wonder, if an artist wanted to help a community how would he do it? He might have tried words. But words can be confused. Maybe he could try to do it with art? Something he knows. Something he has experience with.

How could he best help?

If he were to release art related to a solved city, he wouldn't just be posting a drawing; he would be giving you a Rosetta Stone. He'd be showing you the answers to a test you've already finished so you can identify his technique. Then he could post drawings for the unsolved cities, and you would know what to look for and how best to use them.

Would he post new drawings related to the cities? Would they be old studies from the '80s? Who knows? Maybe he would make a series of these, one to help with each of the cities.

As the message had opened with discussing Palencar and his statement (at the Cleveland Meetup) that "Byron would have been proud of the community the Secret has formed,” the artist in question has been widely assumed to be Palencar.

Observations

  • The initial letters of the title spell OH, as in Cleveland, Ohio.
  • The sphere with inscribed triangle also appears in painting number 4 (which was used in finding the Cleveland casque).
  • The horse, and in particular its tail, appears similar to the centaur in painting number 4.
  • The branches of the trees appear to contain letters. Prominent are the letters C, L, and E, which may correspond to CLE, the airport code for Cleveland.
  • One symbol in the branches appears to be a question mark.
  • The three boxes on the ground appear roughly proportional to the boxes in which the casques were buried.
  • The direction of the shadows on the boxes appear to differ from the directions of the shadow on the horse.
