I don’t know much about metal detectors but as they relate to this puzzle, there is no evidence that they would be useful in the recovery of a casque. We know from the Cleveland narrative that there is a small amount of metal on the key contained inside the casque, but to date, there has been no information on whether that key is detectable. My guess is that it’s not, and that was by design.

I think the metal in the key within the casque was once described as a tiny allen wrench perhaps no thicker than a penny or 1.5mm.
I think the biggest obstacle to metal detecting is the depth where anything deeper than 12 inches is incredibly hard to detect with the average sized/powered coil, but that’s just barely scratching the surface when it comes to learning how to use a detector. Since these casques are described as being anywhere from 2 to 3 feet deep, there’s very little hope in a metal detector being of any use.
I’ll be using one for the first time next weekend, just for fun. I’ll see if I can run some tests on a tiny allen wrench or a large paper clip to see how it works at different depths.
