Just joined!
I been checking the threads and I think I have a good idea of new dig spot.
Ive been going though old photos and talking to people I know who have lived hear since the 70s onwards.
Could anyone please help with information on contacting Golden Gate Park about how to get permission to dig?
EveryGirlYouKnow, the universe is a strange place. So I’m wondering if you and I come to the same conclusion!? How awesome would that be!?

Unfortunately, what we need are old eyewitnesses to how these locations looked at the time the book was published. New thoughts are welcome as to how we might interpret clues and infer what they meant decades ago, from a time without satellite imagery or deep research tools like Google.
If you had the stamina, you could revisit all of the posts of past discussions, on this forum here and on
“Tweleve” (not a typo)
, to read the history of how some of our most prominent theories have evolved. You’ll also find reports from people who dug up various locations without success.
At first, threads were organized by breaking out the images and verses into their own threads. Over time, we have paired them, but there is always an undercurrent of disagreement whether these pairings or their assumed locations might be wrong. That’s why we don’t have 12 city threads floating to the top.
As for San Francisco, a few places around Golden Gate Park were already dug up. A few other nearby alternative sites have been suggested, but the landmarks have changed over time. We may never know whether landscaping has already destroyed a casque. We may never know that we have already solved several of these puzzles correctly but arrived too late for confirmation.
Again, welcome. As with any community (both online and in real life), we have our quirks and our history. Our tradition has always strived to share information, not hoard secrets (no pun intended) or gloat about knowing more than others. We feel a collective ownership over the treasures, and feel that this is no longer a race or a competition. We can agree to disagree on some details and theories, but we all just want to find closure for the unsolved mysteries, and we’re supportive of anyone who has the same goals.
(maybe I should pin this essay somewhere)

We are new here and are very interested in helping with the search for the San Francisco casque. We’ve been doing some research, but wondered what theories/insight you might have for us? Personally, we are leaning towards it being hidden in Golden Gate Park, and we’ve been trying to make connections between image one and verse seven (there seem to be many), but we would love to hear from pros and experienced seekers of the casques.
Thanks,

We’ll just keep pondering.
Does anyone know where we could find a list of spots that have already been dug up? Or, like with the other two casques found, is it just a matter of trying again? I know the Cleveland one was only found after practically digging up the whole plot, and the Chicago one was all but given up on until someone’s misstep caused the edge of the hole to crumble, revealing the casque.
We’re playing around with the idea of it being in or near the Chinese pavilion, which was dedicated a year before the book was published and seems to have ties to the image. In addition, the Cleveland casque, which was the “Greek” immigrants’, was found in the Greek Cultural garden. It just makes sense that the Chinese pavilion would have something to do with the location of the casque.

Not sure if this has been mentioned before, but a step is also a unit of measure.
“A step (Latin: gradus, pl. gradÅ«s) was a Roman unit of length equal to 2½ Roman feet (pedes) or ½ Roman pace (passus). Following its standardization under Agrippa, one step was roughly equivalent to 0.81 yards or 0.74 meters.
The Byzantine pace (Greek: βήμα, bḗma) was an adaption of the Roman step, a distance of 2½ Greek feet.[3]
Similarly, the US customary pace is a distance of 2½ feet or 30 inches.”
So a giant pole plus a giant step= 19 feet?

That larger, more inclusive spirit was in the air for the Decoration Day that was celebrated in San Francisco on 30 May 1913. Based on the extensive illustrated coverage in the next morning’s San Francisco Call newspaper, it appears that the 1913 event was conceived as the launch of a dedicated effort to raise the profile of Decoration Day as a more general holiday of remembrance.
In addition to the usual military commemorations — services at the Presidio and the casting of garlands on the waters of the Golden Gate — there was something like a public “tour” of the city’s private cemeteries, starting at Mission Dolores and proceeding to the “Big Four” at Lone Mountain: Odd Fellows, Masonic, Calvary and Laurel Hill.
Just for fun, May 1913 in GGP

I am not familiar with the Chinese Pavillion, personally. I feel like the image does present the chinese theme but only as a flavor for San Francisco in general, to tie it to the list of fairy-folk origins in the book. Wasn’t the Chicago image suggesting an Irish culture, too?

i can only remember two locations off the top of my head where maltedfalcon dug in Golden Gate Park, or maybe only one?
shoot, I have trouble remembering all the places i have dug.
however I did not dig near the horshoepit or the staircase near the conservatory of flowers.that was somebody else.
among the many locations I’ve dug at, are the rose garden, the golfcourse, Lindley meadows, near the cross, near keyzar stadium, and near the Great Highway. (all with park permission!)

It’s a perfect fit for the theme of the image, but I suspect that it would be a wild stretch trying to tie it with the verse.
