Like many, I recently got into this hunt after watching the episode of Expedition Unknown The Secret a month or so back.
After doing quite a bit of research on a particular verse and illustration thought to be close to me, I believed I had everything solved. So, a couple of weeks ago, my kids and I drove five hours and probed around the spot I thought it was at. To my astonishment, when we probed the exact spot I thought it could very likely be at, we hit something about a foot and a half below the ground! It’s not perfectly 8 inches square and flat like what I would think it would be. That said, it is about 8 or 9 inches square, but certain points are lower than others (possibly broken box?). Anyways, I chickened out and was too afraid to dig to see if we were right, so we decided to go back home and think about what to do next.
Questions:
What should I do from here?
Should I just go back and dig it up?
Should I get permission to dig?
How do I even go about getting permission to dig?
Who do I contact to get permission to dig?
Do I tell the person I’m asking for permission that I’ve already probed that spot or leave that part out?

Welcome to the hunt!
It would help a lot if you told us the city. Different cities have different attitudes about the hunt, and different people on these boards that can help you with inside info.

No
Yes
It depends on where you think it is, A city park, you contact City parks and rec. A county park you contact county park admin.
Ask nicely and explain who what where why – remember they are at work and don’t waste their time…
See the above
Probably not – it might cloud things, lately you need permission to even probe…
Fyi it should be no more that 5inches x 5 inches. but yes it could be broken and or scattered. who knows…
Without revealing your spot, which city? That should help people let you know who to contact…
Good Luck!

I love hearing about experiences from people that are going out and taking a hands on approach. Get permission and do it the right way. Best of luck.

It’s certainly a pleasant change from “I’VE SOLVED IT AND I WON’T SHARE ANYTHING, WHY IS NO ONE BOWING TO ME”

Thanks for the responses.
Fingers crossed… If all goes according to plan, hopefully, I’ll be right and have some really good/new information to share on how to solve these things.
With that said, on all these arm chair hunts I’ve done, it seems I’m very good at getting to the right spot, but very bad at actually finding it once I’m there. Lets hope this time is different!
More to come in a few weeks!

if you are in Herman park go dig it up
I will do it for you if you want
I dig in Herman park. I dug up a rock that was buried about a foot down. it was somewhat square about 8 inches

Love this post. Definetly the way things should be done here. I love the criticism and cynicism because it is needed, however a positive initial reaction and approach to good hearted posts seem to result in better progress for us all.
The hunt continues…

Oh, also you should check out the image 8 thread, there’s good work, even recently, showing how much the park has changed. Feels like lots of good solves get scrapped because the dig site was very different in 1980
