Or take individual words — for any single word, there is the problem of which among the many possible Japanese equivalents to choose. For this reason I have treated my verse translations as provisional attempts, and have included the original English poems alongside them.

That said, with only the original poems and my provisional translations, the whole thing is like grasping at clouds — far too vague and unclear. So I placed an international telephone call to Byron Preiss, the original book’s editor living in New York, and obtained special hints for Japanese readers. Of course these are not hints that would allow you to solve the puzzles immediately. In some cases, the hints provided might actually constrain your imagination and make things even more difficult.

Even so, hints are hints — and using them as a starting point from which to reason in various directions will undoubtedly bring you closer to the fairies’ treasures.
