ドミヴィ Domivye 家につく小人の老人。 ストーブのうしろに隠れるほど小
さく、 赤シャツ 白いあご髭、 赤い眼の老人。
ヴィリ Vily 空飛ぶ妖精。 ユーゴスラビア、ハンガリーの草地で見かける。
ラスカルキ Ruskalki 水の精。 緑の髪、 青白い肌で河の流れにいる。
シルキー Silkies 白い婦人をさす。 女の幽霊、 滝の上に張りだした古木の交差
した大きな枝にすわって人間にいたずらする。 宝物が見つかるといたずらをやめる。
ケルピー Kelpies 馬の姿をした水の精。 ときおり貝や海草で髪を飾った若い
男の姿をして、 人間をだまして水死させる。 巨人。

シー Sidhe やせて、 ととのった顔立ち、 若々しい。 人間のまえでしか姿を現
わさない。 肌はやわらかく、着物は目がくらむほど白い。 おとなしい性質。
レプラコーン Leprachauns 小人。三角帽をかぶり、長いマントを着、大きい
銀のバックルのついた靴をはいている。 パイプと皮のサイフを肌身離さずもって
いて、木の根や虚城に棲む。
フィア・ディヤルグ Fir Darrigs 火にあたるのが好きでいつも赤い服をきて
いる。 腹黒く、太鼓腹をして、 性悪のいたずらもの。 悪夢をみさせる。

フェアリー Fairies 丘や森や地下、ほら穴や海底に棲む神秘的な力をもつ霊。
ピクシー Pixies 岩の下、森や草地に棲む小妖精。

ドワーフ Dwarves 黒い帽子をかぶり、 地底に棲む小人。 楡の木の下でよく見
かける。また巧みな金銀細工師であり、神々の武器や女神の装身具をつくる。
ウィチェル Witchl 60センチ前後の家の精で、長い銀のあご髭、くぼんだ眼、
つきでた腹、細長い足の、 よくとおる声をした妖精。
ハッチェン Hiitchen 赤い帽子と緑か赤の洋服をきた小人、馬小屋、かまどの
裏、 地下室などに棲み、 家の仕事をてつだったり、じゃましたりする。

ピープルオピース People O’ Peace 金髪か赤毛に緑色のとんがり帽子
をかぶり、満月の夜に高い柱の見える草の丘に棲む。 5月ごろによく見る。
トロウ Trows 女王の臣下の灰色の人びと。 金や銀の皿に盛られた料理をむや
みやたらと食べる。 蒲の穂にまたがって空を飛び、効きめのたしかな治療薬をも
っていて、気にいった人間にわけてくれたりする。
ブラウニー Brownie 暖炉のフックなどにいる毛むくじゃらの家につく妖精。
しわだらけの顔と茶色い肌をして、ぼろをまとって、 納屋などに棲みつく。
ホブゴブラン Hobgoblins 1杯のミルクのために粉をひいたり木を切ったり、
召使いの仕事をする家霊。
ボガート Boggarts 騒音をたてる精霊ポルタガイストと同じいたずら者。

アルバン Alven 透明にちかいので姿形ははっきりしない。 夜なかに出没する

妖精で、 風や水中の水泡や割れた卵の殻にのって移動する。
クラボテールマニキン Klabautermanikins 船の船首飾りに棲みつき、北海
バルチック海、 大西洋、 地中海などを旅してまわる。 煙草を好む。
ノーム Gnomes 地中に棲み 秘宝をまもる小人。
〈フランス〉
コレ Korreds ブルターニュ地方の海抜0メートル以下に棲みつき、 異常な大
声で笑う。 猫背で黒いぼさぼさ髪、 ルビーのような眼に、 猫のような爪をもつ。
ダム・ブランシュ Dames Blanche 白い女の意味をもつ幽霊。 ブロンドの髪、
白い服、そして立ち枯れ草のなかに棲む。
ルウ・ガル Loup Garoux 人間が狼に変身したと考えられるもの。 夜遊びを
する魔法使い。

ハダス Hadas 人やもぐらやこうもりの姿をした妖精。 美しいが、あひるの足や
蛇の尾などのひとつだけ欠点をもつ。 姿を消すこともでき樹の葉のあいだに棲む。
デュエンド Duende 人里離れたほら穴、 塔、 廃屋にいる。 緑、赤、 灰色の服
をきて、小さな帽子をかぶっている。 夜が明けるといなくなる。

フォレッティ Folletti 巻き毛でぱっちりした眼、 動物の足をもつ。 姿を消す
力をもった魔法の赤い頭巾をかぶっている。
ファファルリ Farfarelli 小さな蝶という意。 動きまわってほとんど止まるこ
とがない。 人間には友好的であるが、同時にいたずら好きでうるさく悩ます。
サルバニ Salvani 木を守る人間と同じ大きさの精霊。 毛むくじゃらの体。
アグアーヌ Aguane 実のなる木を守り、河をきれいにする。 老婦の姿をとる。
リンチェッティ Linchetti 夜だけ姿をみせる小妖精。 悪夢をみさせる。
<アラビア〉
ジン Djinn 願いごとを実現する魔法使い。 『アラビアン・ナイト』のアラジ
ンは有名。 煙のたたない火からつくられている。
ペリ Peri 美しい乙女の姿をした妖精。

木の霊 Tree Fairies 姿や形や大きさはさまざまで、 木の寿命や、 気候によっ
て姿はいろいろある。 楡の木、菩提樹、樫の木などの霊が有名。

Russia
Domivye — A small elderly household spirit. So small he hides behind the stove. An old man with a red shirt, white beard, and red eyes.
Vily — Flying fairies. Seen in the meadows of Yugoslavia and Hungary.
Ruskalki — Water spirits. Green-haired, pale-skinned, dwelling in river currents.
Ireland/Scotland
Silkies — White ladies. Female ghosts who sit on the crossed branches of ancient trees overhanging waterfalls and play tricks on humans. Stop their mischief when treasure is found.
Kelpies — Water spirits in the form of horses. Occasionally appear as young men with hair decorated with shells and seaweed, deceiving humans into drowning. Also giants.
Ireland
Sidhe — Slender, fine-featured, youthful. Only appear before humans. Soft skin, blindingly white clothing. Gentle nature.
Leprechauns — Small people. Wear triangular hats, long cloaks, shoes with large silver buckles. Never without their pipe and leather purse. Live in tree roots and hollow castles.
Fir Darrigs — Love sitting by fires, always dressed in red. Scheming, pot-bellied, malicious tricksters. Cause bad dreams.
England
Fairies — Mysterious spiritual beings with supernatural powers, living in hills, forests, underground, caves, and the seabed.
Pixies — Small sprites living beneath rocks, in forests and meadows.
Germany
Dwarves — Small people wearing black hats, living underground. Often seen beneath elm trees. Skilled goldsmiths and silversmiths who craft weapons for gods and jewelry for goddesses.
Witchl — Household spirits about 60cm tall, with long silver beards, sunken eyes, protruding bellies, spindly legs, and penetrating voices.
Hütchen — Small people in red hats and green or red clothing, living in stables, behind hearths, and in cellars. Help with or interfere in household tasks.
Scotland
People O’ Peace — Blonde or red-haired, wearing green pointed hats, living on grassy hills with tall standing stones visible, on full moon nights. Most often seen around May.
Trows — Grey people, subjects of the queen. Eat indiscriminately from gold and silver dishes. Fly through the air on cattail stalks. Possess reliable remedies and occasionally share them with favored humans.
Brownies — Hairy household sprites living near fireplace hooks. Wrinkled faces, brown skin, ragged clothing. Live in barns.
Hobgoblins — Household spirits who grind flour, chop wood, and do servants’ work in exchange for a cup of milk.
Boggarts — Mischievous like the poltergeist, making loud noises.
Netherlands/Belgium
Alven — Nearly transparent, difficult to make out clearly. Nocturnal sprites that travel on wind, water bubbles, and broken eggshells.
Klabautermanikins — Live on ships’ figureheads, travelling the North Sea, Baltic, Atlantic, and Mediterranean. Fond of tobacco.
Gnomes — Small underground-dwelling people who guard hidden treasures.
France
Korreds — Live below sea level in Brittany, laugh with abnormally loud voices. Hunchbacked, with black disheveled hair, ruby-like eyes, and cat-like claws.
Dames Blanches — “White ladies” — ghosts. Blonde hair, white clothing, living among withered standing grass.
Loup Garoux — Believed to be humans transformed into wolves. Nocturnal sorcerers.
Greece
Centaurs — Mythical creatures, human above the waist, horse below. Educated by Apollo and Artemis, skilled in music, medicine, and prophecy.
Nymphs — Spirits of sea, river, spring, mountain, and forest. Personified goddesses in the form of young beautiful women. Not immortal. Love song and dance, bestow blessings on humans. Have prophetic abilities — if they fall in love with a human, that person is carried away from this world.
Satyrs — Half-human, half-beast gods of mountains, fields, and forests. Imagined as young men with pointed ears and enormous phalluses. Pleasure-seeking, fond of wine and women, chasing nymphs.
Spain/Portugal
Hadas — Fairies taking the form of people, moles, or bats. Beautiful but each possessing one flaw — duck’s feet, a snake’s tail, etc. Can become invisible and live among tree leaves.
Duende — Found in remote caves, towers, and abandoned buildings. Wear green, red, or grey clothing and small hats. Vanish at dawn.
Italy
Folletti — Curly-haired with bright eyes and animal feet. Wear a magic red hood that grants the power of invisibility.
Farfarelli — Meaning “small butterfly.” Constantly moving, almost never still. Friendly toward humans but simultaneously mischievous and bothersome.
Salvani — Human-sized spirits that protect trees. Hairy bodies.
Aguane — Protect fruit-bearing trees and keep rivers clean. Take the form of old women.
Linchetti — Small sprites that only appear at night. Cause bad dreams.
Arabia
Djinn — Sorcerers who grant wishes. Aladdin from One Thousand and One Nights is famous. Made from smokeless fire.
Peri — Fairies in the form of beautiful maidens.
Africa
Tree Fairies — Varying in form, shape, and size depending on the tree’s lifespan and climate. The spirits of elm, linden, and oak trees are particularly well known.
